Do I:

[ ] buy a laptop I can use to make the 7 mortality presentations I need to finish by the end of the month? (correction, 7 and running, since Feb is not yet over)… I’m eyeing the white ultraportable eeePC:

My social life recently has been limited to visiting patients, interaction with the friendlier consultants (I try to hide from the scary ones), and playing PSP (actually an alone-activity, but at this point, any respite from hospital work would qualify as socialization). Of the three, it is obviously the last that I enjoy the most. Especially since I rediscovered that the PSP reincarnated one of my favorite Playstation games of all time… PaRappa the Rapper! In this video PaRappa is being taught by Instructor Mooselini to drive and rap at the same time (my personal favorite, Stage 2):

Excerpts from the wiki entry for PaRappa the Rapper (sorry, tamad):

Released in the mid 1990s, it was one of the first rhythm video games of its time. While the gameplay is simplistic on a certain level, the game is remembered for its unique graphic design, its quirky soundtrack, and its bizarre plot. The game is named after its protagonist, PaRappa, a rapping dog, with the motto “I gotta believe!”…

Considered revolutionary in its day, PaRappa the Rapper is fundamentally similar to the classic 1980s game Simon, in which the player is required to repeat a sequence of sounds and light. PaRappa the Rapper demands that the player not only get the sequence correct but also the timing of the sequence. The game provides small portions of spoken vocals that are triggered when the appropriate buttons are pressed. Pressing the buttons in the correct order, with the correct timing, provides an intelligible imitation of rap, while pressing the buttons in an incorrect order or with lousy timing rewards the player with nothing more than unintelligible garbage…

The player takes on the role of PaRappa, a paper-thin rapping dog. He is trying to win the heart of a flower-like girl named Sunny Funny. He is aided by his friends Katy Kat (an enthusiastic cat) and PJ Berri (a fat teddy bear DJ with a huge appetite). Also vying for Sunny Funny’s attention is PaRappa’s arch rival Joe Chin, a rich, narcissistic dog…

To impress Sunny Funny, PaRappa learns to fight at a kung-fu dojo, takes a driver’s education course to get his license, learns the art of flea-market training to raise money for a new car, bakes a seafood cake, uses the bathroom, and finally, performs a hip hop song on stage at a party…

Oha! Check out the super cool official website for videos, pics, fan art, and lots of PaRappa stuff!!! Ka-addict to, promise!

2008 is just around the corner and it’s about that time of the year again for me to get a new planner (quite a requirement for a semi-OC person like me). Last year and the year before and the year “before-before” (hi to my Comm I/II Prof, Ma’am Gavino of UPM at this point, who finds the distinctly Filipino phrase “before-before” weird), I used Starbucks planners. It was quite easy to get them then; I was still a med student and the stickers overflowed with each exam that went my way (at worst, there could be 4 exams in a week). This year though, the stickers were more difficult to complete (reason 1: unemployed state, reason 2: no more exams, reason 3: tachycardia), so I had to find an alternative, especially since by 7AM of January 1, 2008, it’ll be all systems go for a full year of toxic work c/o the PGH Department of Neurosciences for me (gawd!). Good thing I found the Jollibee planner. As it turns out with my critical appraisal (which follows), it seems that the Jollibee planner is not just a decent alternative, it’s even a better datebook than the one from Starbucks!

Cover
One doesn’t judge a book by its cover… planners exempted:

Starbucks: Made of soft, dark brown leather (if you are to believe the barista I talked to, it’s real leather made of cow hide), the cover is actually too soft such that if you put it inside your bag, the edges can be folded causing the leather to be creased. Additionally, think of the environmental cost: the cover is made of cow hide (poor Moo!) plus it’s probably tanned using toxin-containing, water-polluting dyes. Plus points for the cool, preppy strap though.

Jollibee: made of pressed cardboard (thus probably recycled and eco-friendly), it’s fold- and crease-resistant, and it appears very sturdy (it will probably last the whole year with minimal wear and tear signs). The cover design is an artistically-done abstract full of reds (very Jollibee, very aloyloy), and there is a nice collage of Jollibee images on the inside.

Winner: Jollibee!

Binding
Binding is very important (lest you want the pages to scatter by August 2008 — lucky pa naman dapat ang 8/8/08). Comparing Starbucks planners through the years, I think the best was their 2006 version (?) which had a simple black cover and bookbound pages.

Starbucks: ring-bound.
Jollibee: bookbound.
Winner: Jollibee!!!

Planner Pages
Judging from look and feel, the two planners have similar paper/material. Differences with respect to planner pages are:

Starbucks: Limited space for weekends (half of what is alloted for notes during the weekdays… does this imply that Starbucks-planner users have more busy workday skeds?). There is a “Notes” page at the end of each monthly section.

Jollibee: Equal space alloted for each day of the week (for a more balanced life daw). There are 3-5 “Thoughts” pages at the end of each monthly section. Plus, each weekly spread has a notes area somewhere on the spread. Thus, the format is great for daily (ie, what to do for the day), weekly (ie, projects due sometime during the week), and monthly planning (ie, monthly budget). The December section has 7 notes pages… perfect for making Christmas wishlists/giftlists (hehe, kakatapos pa lang ng Pasko, yun na kaagad iniisip ko)!

Winner: Jollibee pa rin!

Freebies
I will admit that one the major come-ons for the previous versions of the Starbucks planner were the freebies that came along with the datebooks. There were years when the planners came with either gift certificates, or stickers, or coupons, etc. Let’s see what’s in store for us this year:

Starbucks: an unsharpened pencil.

Jollibee: There’s a full sheet of coupons that Jollibee fans like myself can use for the whole year. Save 10 pesos on a Chickenjoy meal in January, or get two Chickenjoys for just 100 pesos in Feb… Get pancakes and fries for just 40 pesos in March, and get a FREE Choco Sundae in March! The list goes on and on! One whole year of Jollibee fun!

Winner: Jollibee syempre!

In Celebration of…

Starbucks: 10 years of Starbucks in the Philippines.
Jollibee: 30 years of Jollibee! Yay!
Winner: Jollibee!

Charity

Starbucks: For every planner redeemed, Starbucks donates a certain amount to SparkHope, a UNICEF program that promotes early childhood development in the Philippines.

Jollibee planner: Every planner comes with a raffle ticket; 10 winners will win 30,000 pesos each! This amount can be donated of course to charitable institutions, or better yet, to my NGO project for early childhood development!

And the overall champion is (all together now):

J (J!) O (O!) double L (double L!) I (I!) B (B!) double E (double E!)… It’s Jollibee!!!

And while the actual event (ie, eating time) is a very happy time for everyone, the activities some hours prior are usually toxic and stressful. Grocery lines start snaking and become kilometers long, taxis become rare commodities, pots and pans have to be brought down from places you didn’t know existed… all this culminating in a mad dash of cooking/preparing the usual suspects (in our family, they’re spaghetti, ham, and fruit salad).

So this year, our family decided to be practical (read: lazy) and instead of tiring ourselves with hectic cooking, we spent the 24th doing our last-minute shopping; then we just had our Christmas dinner outside (we also had loads of Friday’s Fun taking pics).

Still, Christmas didn’t seem complete without at least a semblance of a potluck meal. Hence, upon arrival at home, I prepared my very own contribution for our Noche Buena Dessert: Strawberries and Cream. The recipe follows (no, it’s not from Jamie’s Kitchen; he wouldn’t dare make a dish this complex):

1. Whip some cream, add some condensed milk.
2. Chuck in chopped strawberries.
3. Enjoy!

It’s delicious with Bailey’s. Merry Christmas to one and all!!!

The Philippine contingent on Saturday ended up in 6th place at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games, a far cry from the what was posible 2 years ago when the meet was hosted by Manila, where — cheered on by their kababayans and helped by homecourt advantage – our atheletes won the most golds. This year, on the other hand, the country took home two special awards: the MVP of the entire tournament was Miguel Molina, a Filipino swimmer, who was chosen because he was the winningest male athlete in the games (with 5 medals in all); the award for Sore Loser of the Year meanwhile also goes to Team Philippines, with the most number of athletes walking out from their respective matches to protest against alleged bias in their events (ie, boxing, taekwondo). Pambansang Kamao Manny Pacquiao I heard was very disappointed with the new title bestowed upon Filipino athletes; Thaksin on the other hand must be thinking that this was payback for his allegations last time that there was cheating in officiating in the Manila games.

Instantly, there were criticisms of the Philippine strategy in sports development: in today’s Talk Back (with Tina Palma) episode (ANC), some athletes, PSC officials, congressmen (what an opportune time for grandstanding!), and other concerned sporting crazy Pinoys lashed out at the government for the measly support that our athletes get. Their argument was quite easy. Lack of funding for sports equals lack of facilities for training equals lack of competitive experience for the atheletes equals lackluster performance in the Games. Very similar to the logic of: lack of funding for health equals lack of facilities for hospitals equals lack of competitive experience for doctors equals migration of health practitioners to greener pastures. The question now is, in a developing country like the Philippines, which logic problem would be best to resolve first? Bacolod representative Puentevella’s answer? “You want more medals? Let’s pay the price.”

So how much is it that we have to pay? (I have the right to ask, I am a tax payer). Here’s the (unofficial) data: in preparing for the Beijing Olympics, the Philippine Sports Commission is bound to receive 260 million pesos in 2008. That’s an additional 160 million pesos from the PSC’s current budget. And here’s the comparison: for 2008, the PGH is bound to receive only an additional 3 million pesos for capital outlay. Yes, our country is spending an additional 160M to send more of our best fighters abroad, and only allocating less than 2% of that amount for new equipment in the country’s biggest state-funded hospital.

Funding for sports development per se is not what I’m targeting. Government support for sports is a must… sports and sporting events boost national pride, give morale, and draw the youth away from drugs and other illegal and dangerous hobbies (hooray to this rhetoric; it’s also my favorite argument, being a utilitarian). At the same time, sporting development recently has been associated with expensive scholarships for athletes to study abroad (tinalo pa ang mga top grads ng UP College of Medicine), and for other superfluous spending priorities… all in effort to increase the chances of the Philippine contingent to grab that coveted Olympic gold.

Can’t we settle for what we can have with our budget as a developing nation? What is the added benefit of a few more golds in the tally? If we aim instead for grassroots sports development instead of competitiveness in international events, wouldn’t it be a better usage of the small funds allocated for sports?

What is the usefulness of an Olympic gold for our hungry nation?

Sometimes the problem with med school is that you get so busy with duties and with studying, that it becomes difficult to find time to attend to other interests, especially those that are not relatable to work inside the four walls of the hospital. So many episodes, movies, games, plays, books, events, news, issues etc etc were lost this way during my 5-year stay at the PGH. Survival sometimes meant having to block out all other competing interests in an effort to understand and commit to heart (yes, not just to memory) the fronto-ponto-cerebello-dentato-rubro-thalamo-cortico-spinal pathway; and for this, the feeling that one is detached from the real world is an all too common experience for the average med student.

Good thing there are reruns.

Today I watched five documentaries in a docufest sponsored by my sister’s org in UP Diliman. All were from the award-winning GMA show I-Witness, and all I missed when they were originally shown on TV. The first, Howie Severino’s Brod Is Thicker Than Water, discussed the death of UP stude and Sigma Rho neophyte Cris Mendez from hazing. When news broke out of Cris’s death, I was on duty at PGH for pre-residency qualification; I found out about it from my sister, Cris’s classmate at the NCPAG. We usually talk about updates on this issue (or the lack thereof) during dinner.

In the documentary, Howie explored the possibility of achieving justice in fraternity-related deaths. The spin in the story showed how in the case of another student who died by the hands of his brods, UP student Alex Icasiano, closure was attained because the fraternity chose to cooperate with the criminal justice system by admitting their error and surrendering the involved brods (something that Sigma Rho has yet to even start doing). Howie was present in person during the screening this afternoon; he described how he had to ambush Sigma Rho law students just to be able to move around the fraternity’s gag order on the issue.

The second documentary was Howie’s Lucayo: Hindi Ito Bastos. The documentary tackled the erotophobia (thanks to Nicolo for the term) involving a custom in Kalayaan, Laguna, where, when a couple would wed, old women in the barangay would welcome them into the married world with dances involving phallic symbols as props (wooden penises and sometimes, eggplants). The docu apparently was found offensive by the MTRCB (validating the erotophobia aspect), and I-Witness was slapped a 2-week suspension. I guess they took literally what anthropologist Ramon Obusan said: “baliktarin mo ang titi, titi pa rin… kiki is kiki pa rin.“

Sandra Aguinaldo’s Doctor Nurse (no videos available, sorry) is about Filipino doctors who take nursing courses just to be able to work in the US. Her docu tells the story of the 2004 Med Boards topnotcher working in the States as a nurse for a hospital; and of other doctors who left their profession to migrate and work in US nursing homes. Sandra exposed how while these MD-RNs miss their parents or children at home, they feel content and satisfied with the economic benefits of their career choice. Unfortunately, the sob story was not balanced with a discussion on the impact of their migration to the local health scenario. For this, I am consulting a study done by Dr Galvez-Tan; I’ll write about it soon.

The 36-Peso Challenge (I couldn’t find videos) is Jay Taruc’s response to the national statistic that says that one needs only 36 pesos to survive a day in the Philippines. He challenges a housewife, a jeepney driver, and a businessman working in Makati to spend only 36 pesos the entire day for both food and non-food expenses (he tried but was unable to challenge President GMA also). After the screenings, I tried The 36-Peso Challenge myself; with the alloted budget, I was able to buy 20 pcs of fishballs (P10), 3 pcs of chicken balls (P10), a cup of buko juice (P7), and a ride home (Ikot jeep for P6.50; for a total of P33.50). I still have P2.50 in savings — assuming that what’s listed would be all that I’ll eat today.

The most provocative of the five documentaries in my opinion was Kara David’s Sa Mata Ni Ekang. The docu tells the story of a family with a drug dealer for a mother, a criminal (holdaper) for a father, and a pimp for a grandmother. The 3-year old kid Ekang is forced to witness shabu sessions at home, and is taught to buy cigarettes from the nearby store for her parents. The documentary ends with a family reunion of sorts as Ekang’s 3-month old sister is baptized in a church. Hopeless and hopeful clash each other all throughout.

DVDs of these and other docus would be highly appreciated gifts this Christmas.

One of the major trends in modern medicine is its respect for the intrinsic power of numbers and their study. In the movement known as Evidence Based Medicine (or EBM), the teachings of tired old doctors passed on from generation to generation are not taken as absolute truths, but as principles that are less convincing than those supported by hard evidence. The NHS classification of medical literature uses Level A to apply to theses supported by strong studies such as consistent Randomised Control Trials (or RCTs), and Level E to refer to expert opinion or theoretical results (find out what Level B, C, and D mean in Wikipedia). The whole idea is to determine best practices in the medical field by testing them against objective observations and to do away with extraneous variables such as bias in making important medical decisions.

Indeed numbers have a very strong power to convince. When used properly (ie, in presentations that can sustain the interest number-haters like myself), they can strongly influence opinion, affect stances, and forward certain advocacies (who can forget that three-storey projection in The Inconvenient Truth? 3:15 on this YouTube video). I am sharing below my favorite number-play sites (ie, sites I go to when I suddenly get that nerdy urge to know more about the world):

Gapminder (www.gapminder.org) was introduced to me by my Med Informatics advocate friend Pam, MD. This tool can compare different countries based on three variables at the same time (using the X and Y axes, and the size of the dot that represents the intersection). In addition, the interpretation can be made relative to the country’s geographic location by looking at the color of the marker. Time as a variable can also be injected by pressing the play button (toggles the markers to “move through time”), or by adjusting the time bar. In this example, the graph is able to convey that the Philippines in 2004 had a life expectancy and income per capita almost similar to that of smaller nations Jordan, Paraguay, and El Salvador (in the screenshot below, the Philippine dot is marked, and the smaller green and yellow circles nearest to it represent the three countries mentioned… it’s really better to see the dynamic graph; click the link above):

The limitation of Gapminder is that there are very few indicators (life expectancy, income per capita, urban population, internet users, contraceptive use… only 17 in all). And while these are spread among differing categories of study, the data set still is very much limited… On the other hand, there’s NationMaster (www.nationmaster.com), which has probably the largest data sets comparing different nations online. The information on this site is compiled from the CIA factbook (aha! data from US spies!), the United Nations, and the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). The data set is huge, with 30 categories (covering agriculture, lifestyle, terrorism, etc) and around 300 indicators per category. NationMaster however loses to Gapminder’s strength, which is the dynamic presentation… most comparisons are made via conventional graphs or charts (ADHD people like me like their charts moving).

Enough of the toxic. Let’s go to Swivel (www.swivel.com). The banner of this site reads: “tasty data goodies.” I think of the site as sort of a Wikipedia/YouTube for number-players… in this site, users get to upload their data sets for sharing. On the other hand, there are data sets marked as ”from official sources” (like the OECD, WHO, UNESCO) to indicate that the comparison came directly from trusted organizations. The Sexual Experiences comparison among countries noted that the global percentage of extramarital affairs is 22% and that of a threesome experience is 15%. Australia is also apparently the world leader in homosexual experiences, while Norway leads the race in one night stands. Unfortunately, there was no data available for the Philippines (note: there have been concerns about the credibility of the data set as mentioned on the site… it still is fun though). There are other weird and zany data sets like one comparing MySpace friends of the different zodiac signs (with politician Leo surprisingly getting last place and Sagittarius getting the top spot).

Finally, in a world that is rightly concerned about carbon emissions, sites for carbon monitoring are a must. The website of CARMA (Carbon Monitoring for Action, www.carma.org) lists the carbon emissions of major power plants in the world, as well as the power generating capabilities of different countries. This is where I learned that the Philippines still uses fossil fuels for 57% of its energy needs (hydroelectric energy generates 14% and other renewable sources account for around 28%). We have about the same carbon emission load as Romania (but Romania generates much more output, possibly because they have a nuclear plant); conversely, our energy output is almost similar to that of Pakistan, but Pakistan has lower CO2 emissions (again probably due to a nuclear power plant). As I mentioned, numbers should guide policies, and I think this makes the case for the reactivation of the Philippine effort to go nuclear.

I have never been a fan of numbers. As a kid, I hated math. Count Dracula’s antics never really appealed to me. My choice of vocation was probably even a subconsciously driven strategy to avoid mathematics in adult life. With the popularity of EBM, however, data and statistics are unavoidable even for MDs. Resources like those above make life easier for number-haters like me.

Our internet connection at home has been down for more than a week now; I’ve thus been forced to do my online-related activities at internet cafes outside. Not only is this bothersome in the sense that I have to block out noisy high school kids playing online games while attempting to blog, check blogs, get e-mail, search and surf; the idea of leaving footprints of whatever internet activities I’ve been doing for the next user to see and use is also not a very comfortable thought for me (I remember someone hacked into my e-mail account dati!). This inconvenience has resulted in a few e-mails not replied to last week, some ideas not translated into blogposts, and in research work being postponed (hopefully not indefinitely). So apparently, internet access is important to me, and the current problem in connectivity impacts not just a few of my daily habits.

I wonder, how important really is the internet to Filipinos? In searching for statistics related to internet use in the Philippines, I chanced upon the following interesting facts about Pinoy internet usage and history:

(Note: There is no intent to miss out on facts not listed below… either those weren’t listed on the sites I visited, or they didn’t interest me much. See my sources at the bottom of the post… If you have other info you want to share, don’t hesitate to add to the list!)

> As of April 2007, there were about 14M internet users in the Phils (16% of the population)
> Data from 2004 indicate that 38% of internet usage was from internet cafes
> The forecast is for internet usage to grow by 23% annually (21.5M users by 2008)
> It is also expected that there would be 6.3M Pinoy gamers in 2008 (or 29% of users)
> Moscom was the first Philippine company to be registered as an Internet Service Provider
> The first Philippine eyeball supposedly occurred in January 1995
> G-spot is said to be the first Pinoy search engine (1995)
> The first mailing list site dedicated to a Pinoy artist was for Lea Salonga fans
> Magoo’s Pizza was the first food company to have a site (1996)
> Its online ordering service won the 1998 Webby Award for e-commerce (hooray for pizza!)
> In 1996, Mahathir Mohamad, Yasser Arafat, and then President Ramos chatted for 10 minutes
> This blog is reportedly the first in the Phils (1996)
> The first Phil Webby Awards were given in 1998; see all the winners since then here
> First senator to have a .com was Raul Roco
> Chikka Instant Messenger was launched in 2001
> The first Philippine Blogging Summit was held in 2005
> In 2007, now senator Chiz Escudero launched an online campaign via live chat
> In September 2007, I started a blog (ehehehehe!)

No pop blog is complete without a post on YouTube. This video sharing website is arguably one of the most popular destinations in the (pla-) net; it’s hard to think of anyone who hasn’t gone to visit it even once. As for me, I YouTube frequently, and although I still haven’t uploaded my own videos (again, the ghost of my techno-incompetence haunts me), I have quite a few favorite YouTube finds that I can share.

Happy Slip is one channel that will always be on my Favorites list (I hear she’s coming up with a DVD compilation of her videos soon!). This Filipina in the States maintains her homeland connection by making (and starring in) uber funny videos on Pinoy eccentricities – including our love for soaps and drama:

YouTube is also my source for great shorts done by ingenious filmmakers (oh how I wish I had their talent!). The Futureshorts channel is one of my favorites. I like watching shorts more than films; maybe because I have ADHD. Speaking of fast-paced:

And when I find a certain full-length movie interesting, I search YouTube for trailers, music videos, deleted scenes, and other stuff related to the film. Here’s the opening segment of Citizen Dog, a Thai film I saw a few years ago in an int’l film festival (still looking for a DVD of this one):

Of course, YouTube also has Bioman videos!!! The following is a superb find: an extended version of the opening credits made by Toei for the 30th Anniversary of the Super Sentai:

What’s next? My own video on YouTube? Mayble a vlog? Or a short film? Or a music video? Hmmm… Now if only I can get that cam to work…
